Lent

Wow, has it really been that long since I've posted? I guess it has. I'm here today just to notate what we're doing for Lent. I post really so that I have a record of our life. This year I have our Lent on the fridge. I made up a calendar with readings, prayers, sacrafices, etc. for each day. For instance, today the boys each wrote a letter to our sponsored child. We've been sponsors for over a year and have never written. This has been something I've wanted to do for some time and I thought Lent was a great time to get the boys involved in our sponsorship. The other days include things like going to Stations of the Cross, visiting grandparents, reading from The Life of Our Lord for Children or reading a saint story. I've tried to make week nights easier (some type of reading), projects for Saturdays and something family oriented for Sunday. The second thing I've made is a "Lenten tree." The tree was bare on Ash Wednesday. I have a glass full of stickers that we add to the tree every time we say a prayer, do a good deed or make a sacrifice. I can't believe how quickly the tree is filling up! I'm glad to see it. The boys have been really involved in this process which is just what I wanted.

May your Lent be filled with the grace of our Lord.

Squirrel picture post

I know that lots of people hate the squirrels. I have to admit that at our first house I was unsuccessful in my attempts to grow flowers from bulbs in a large part because of the squirrels. So I haven't always loved them. Since reading the book Gooseberry Park by Cynthia Rylant and moving to our new house I have come to have a love for these furry thieves. My dad also refers to Nolan in his endearing way as "squirrely." Yes, the squirrels eat the food I put out for the birds, yes they dig up the yard but they are just so darn CUTE! We spent quite a bit of time over the last two sunny weekends watching these squirrels. We have grey squirrels in our neck of the woods. Nathan is planning his next book report on a non-fiction book about squirrels and we keep the binoculars close at hand at all times. So, just because I love them, here are a few pictures that I took this weekend. If you are interested in a squirrel study, check out Dawn's blog post.

Felt a little like spring

When the sun is shining our sun room heats up nicely. I was able to clean up the mess in there so I could sit down and not feel guilty. I actually had to move out of the sun as I got hot! I bought a new bird feeder and some bird seed today (rember my goals for 2009?). Almost immediately we had a black capped chickadee and a cardinal. The squirrels were out in force today as well. I heard lots of birdsong in the trees. I guess I wasn't the only one enjoying the sun today.
